Autism and ADHD

Autism and ADHD

JV Psychology Services Ltd. offers assessments for Autism and ADHD for children, young people and adults.

Our assessments follow National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE) Guidelines

Two specialist HCPC-registered healthcare professionals from different professional backgrounds (e.g., Clinical Psychologist, Speech and Language Therapist and/or Occupational Therapist) will be involved in completing the assessments

As a service, we endeavour to offer dates for the appointments as close together as possible, usually within one month

What to expect during the assessment

Step 1: Pre-Assessment Consultation (online)

You will be invited to a one-hour screening appointment before we decide together whether a full assessment would be helpful.  You will be sent questionnaires to complete beforehand too.  If there is something that we cannot provide, then we will signpost you to different services that may be most helpful.  For older children and young people, we will also arrange a brief online conversation with them to talk about what will be happening, answer any of their questions, and determine that they consent to the assessment.

Step 2: Developmental History Interview (online)

An interview with parents (or other informants for the person being assessed) using NICE recommended tools (e.g., ACE interview or ADI-R interview schedule, or the Developmental Diagnostic Developmental Interview (3di)) will be completed online.  This appointment takes approximately 2 hours.

We may also send you some more questionnaires to complete. Depending upon your child’s ability and age, there may also be some questionnaires for them to complete. We will also send questionnaires to school, if appropriate for your child.

Step 3: Observational Assessment (in person at your preference of clinic in either Brighouse, Prestwich or Worsley)

During an autism assessment, an observational interview will be completed with the young person or adult being assessed using the ADOS-2 (Autism Diagnostic Observational Schedule – Second Edition), as NICE guidance recommends.  This involves a number of activities and tasks that most people find interesting to take part in.  When assessing for ADHD, we will also meet in-person and have a less structured session, with a more conversational focus. This in-person may take up to 1 hour 30 minutes.

It is standard practice for school-aged children to complete this part of the assessment without a parent present, but please let us know if this might not be possible. A parent or carer typically stays with preschool children.

Step 4: Feedback Appointment (online)

After the interview, observation and all questionnaires have been received back, the different multi-disciplinary team members will meet together to decide on the diagnostic outcome of the assessment. This will include whether we feel that autism and/or ADHD are relevant in understanding aspects of you or your child’s way of seeing the world.  We will then organise an online feedback appointment to discuss this with you, alongside any recommendations that may be helpful.  For child assessments, some parents would prefer to have their child present and some would prefer not to.

Step 5: Completion of Report

A full and detailed report confirming our outcome and with individualised recommendations will be written for you and/or your child.  Please allow 20 working days following the feedback meeting for this.

Step 6: Post-Diagnostic Support (optional)

Dependent on the recommendations indicated from the assessment, it may be possible for you or your child to access post-diagnostic therapy support.  Please do enquire as to availability of any therapy slots that may be coming up.  Please refer to the ‘Therapy & Services’ and  ‘Fees & Sessions’ sections via the buttons below for further information:
