FAQ

What is a neurodevelopmental assessment?

A neurodevelopmental assessment is a comprehensive evaluation carried out by a team of professionals to understand an individual’s cognitive, emotional, and behavioural functioning. It aims to identify neurodevelopmental conditions, such as Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC) or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Condition (ADHD), and to offer insights and recommendations for appropriate support and accommodations.

What does the assessment process involve?

The assessment process varies depending on the individual’s age and the specific needs of the person being assessed. It typically includes:

  • Initial Consultation: A discussion with clinicians to explore concerns and gather relevant developmental history.
  • Standardised Testing: Tools like the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS-2) for Autism assessments and structured interviews for ADHD evaluations.
  • Observations: The individual may be observed in different environments, such as at school, to gain a fuller understanding of how they function in different settings. Information will be obtained from a child’s school teacher and/or SENDCo.
  • Multidisciplinary Team Review: A team discussion to review all collected information and develop a comprehensive understanding.
  • Feedback Session: A meeting to discuss the results and provide recommendations that help the individual thrive.

How long does the assessment process take?

The length of the assessment process can vary depending on the person’s age and specific needs. Some assessments may be completed within a few weeks, while others may take longer, especially if more observations or testing are needed. It is important to discuss the timeline with the assessment provider to understand what to expect.

What happens after the assessment?

After the assessment, a feedback session is typically scheduled to discuss the findings in detail. The clinician will explain the outcomes, provide recommendations for support, and discuss any necessary referrals to specialists. You will also receive a detailed report of diagnostic outcome and offering
recommendations that are tailored to the person’s needs.

Are there any costs associated with the assessment?

Costs for neurodevelopmental assessments vary depending on the service provider and the scope of the assessment. JV Psychology accepts insurance company referrals too. JV Psychology Services offers an initial online consultation for £200, which is deducted from the full cost of the assessment if you choose to proceed. The full cost of an Autism assessment is £1695, and ADHD assessments are £1695. A combined ADHD and Autism assessment is £2695. Additional support sessions, such as post-diagnostic coaching, are available at £360 for up to three sessions.

How do I prepare for the assessment?

To prepare for the assessment, it is helpful to gather any relevant documents, which may include medical records, previous reports, or school records. It can also be beneficial to note any specific concerns or observations regarding the person’s behaviour and development. Questionnaires will be sent to you for completion prior to any interviews, so that you have opportunity to think in more detail about your responses. If applicable, having an open conversation with the person being assessed (if they are able to understand the process) about what to expect can help manage any concerns.

Will the assessment results be shared with others?

Confidentiality is a priority. The results of the assessment will only be shared with others if the individual has provided consent or if required by law. You will be asked about any preferences about sharing information and consent policies with the provider before the assessment begins.

What support is available after the assessment?

Post-assessment support may include additional resources, referrals to specialists, and recommendations for practical strategies or accommodations. At JV Psychology Services, we offer up to three sessions (once monthly) post-diagnostic support sessions to help you implement recommendations, access appropriate support, and monitor progress.

Will my independent neurodevelopmental assessment be accepted by other services, such as the NHS or schools?

Independent neurodevelopmental assessments can be accepted by NHS services and educational institutions, provided they meet certain standards. For NHS services, assessments must align with the guidelines set by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE), which recommends a multidisciplinary approach to assessment. Independent assessments that meet these criteria are generally more likely to be accepted. JV Psychology Services follows NICE-guidance protocol.

Will schools accept a private neurodevelopmental assessment?

Schools often recognise private neurodevelopmental assessments, especially when the assessment aligns with the same standards used by NHS services. However, acceptance may vary between institutions, and it’s advisable to confirm with the school or educational authority beforehand. JV Psychology Services ensures that the assessment includes detailed reports and actionable recommendations that can inform educational support plans.

Do you prescribe medication for ADHD following the assessment?

I do not prescribe ADHD medications directly following the assessment. However, I am “trusted assessor” for a number of prescriber companies. After completing the assessment, I can provide you details of appropriate private prescribers who can assist with medication if this is a suitable option for you or your child. This ensures that you are referred to qualified professionals who can discuss medication options based on your needs. In cases where medication is prescribed via a private prescriber, a “shared care agreement” between the private provider and your GP may be put in place. This means that, under the agreement, your GP will take on the ongoing prescribing and monitoring of medication. The private provider and your GP will work together to ensure that your medication is managed safely and effectively, with regular reviews to track progress.
